I recently read The Eyes Are The Best Part by Monika Kim and I absolutely LOVED it! Now listen, I am not a book reviewer, but I'll try my best not to add any spoilers.
The best way I can describe this story in all its weirdness is that it is a story about a woman spiraling into some sort of female rage while grappling with her own sanity.
The story revolves around the main character's strange urge to devour, let's just call them less conventional foods. But her desire seems to stem from some sort of suppressed rage that targets her mother's relationships with men and even her own.
If you are looking for a great feminist horror read, then I definitely recommend this book. It digs deep into the patriarchal norms of men who cheat, women who are fetishized, and the role of the "nice guy" or the guys that are in the "friend zone."
I will warn you that if you are squeamish, especially about cannibalism, then enter with caution because there is plenty of the ick.
The Eyes Are The Best Part starts off by exploring Ji-won's family dynamics and the relationship between her mother and father. Her mother really suffered through a lot in this book, and it takes its toll on Ji-won's sanity. She begins acting out and it even starts to affect her grades and her own friendships. She even begins doubting her own sanity.
Her mother's new boyfriend is a real motherf'er, pun intended, and Ji-won and her sister cannot stand him. Not only does she have to suffer putting up with this douche, but she also has a new friend who wants more than what Ji-won is willing to give him. The poor girl is getting it from all sides. The only real friend she does seem to have been a girl in her class who I do suspect she may have a crush on, even though the book never explicitly states it. I'm not going to lie, I was rooting for those two to get together the whole time. But
I won't tell you how that ended because I don't want to spoil it.
What I will tell you is that this book is a slow starter, but it gets really crazy when it hits and there is a twist that I didn't see coming. Overall, five out of five stars.
